Slinging our Watermelon

We were really late in planting our watermelons this year and I hope we can hold on until frost.  We love Moon & Stars, an heirloom variety.  It is similar to a Black Diamond watermelon, but it is spotted with small to very large yellow spots, hence the name.

We were running out of garden space so I started to trellis the vine.  What occurred was a watermelon developing, hanging on for dear life.  We devised a sling out of a pinon wood bag to hold it up until it was ready to pick.

Hold on, baby!

I think all of our melons will be ready at once and I hope they fully develop before frost.  I see lots of watermelon rind pickles ready for the Thanksgiving table.
