What Does a Foodie Girl Want for Her Birthday?

I just started on my Christmas 2013 posts and I am already taking a break.   You see, I recently celebrated a birthday and I had such a great time on my special day that I wanted to share the highlights with you all.

Eliot’s Eats presents:   What Does a Foodie Girl Want for Her Birthday?

To start my day, The Hubs presented me with my birthday present.   He picked the perfect present.   No, it wasn’t jewelry or candy; it was an apple tree.

My Arkansas Black Apple tree.

We bought some Arkansas Black Apples a couple of years ago and I fell in love with them.  (Check out my Arkansas Black Apple Pie here.)   I had wanted a tree since then.   Luckily, he read that the Honeycrisp and Gala apple trees that we currently have will work as pollinators for the Arkansas Black.

He taped an apple to it in case I couldn’t identify my gift. 🙂  He is such a comedian!

Now that I had my present, he asked what I wanted to do for the rest of the day.

I had a list.

  1. Attend the Winter Market (which moved from the summer Farmers Market location and will open every other weekend for the winter.)
  2. Attend the Garden Deva open studio.  (I love her work and we have two pieces in our garden.)
  3. Attend the 2nd annual Eat Street Food Truck Festival.

How convenient that these events occurred on my birthday.

2013-11-09 10.58.20

Many artists, artisans, and other vendors were at the Garden Deva event.

I love this building.

2013-11-09 11.07.30

How cool is this?  I want a studio like this.

We bought some cool leftover sheets of metal that we want to turn into trellises.

I also bought a cool healing hand (a small one).

Then, we were off to the Blue Dome District for the food truck festival.

2013-11-09 11.28.20

Tulsa’s own Blue Dome.

Last year we attended the inaugural Eat Street food truck festival.   It was a beautiful day to attend the second one.

2013-11-09 11.28.30

Food truck #1.

We have been dying to try Lone Wolf’s Banh Mi sandwiches and Kimchi fries but at every festival they have attended, the line has been redunkulous!     We were here early this time and scored a pork Banh Mi and some of those illusive Kimchi fries.

2013-11-09 11.39.32

Kimchi fries:  These were delicious!

We purposely did not eat breakfast to gorge ourselves here.

We took a little time out of eating to watch the entertainment.   This was a great people-watching extravaganza!

2013-11-09 11.30.27

Belly dancing and food trucks…what a combination.

Then there was panda-hat-man who first had to be told to put a shirt on and then had to be told not to sit on the stage when the band was playing….After being escorted off the stage, he flipped off the kind policeman behind his back.

2013-11-09 12.01.12

Panda hat man…there are characters at every festival.

Then, it was time to eat again.

2013-11-09 11.51.20

What to choose from next?

We went with the jerked chicken tacos from Mr. Nice Guys.

2013-11-09 11.54.28

These were delicious, too!

Next came some brisket frito pies from Wicked Brisket Chili.

2013-11-09 13.06.21

I didn’t take a picture of the food from this truck because we were standing at this point and I couldn’t get a great pic.

2013-11-09 13.08.56

But, I did take a pic of their cool flag.   The brisket was pretty tasty, too.

Having eaten our fill for a while, we sat and watched some tunes.

2013-11-09 12.01.08

Black Cat Benders

Then came the food truck judges…

2013-11-09 14.06.01

Some food bloggers, a mayoral candidate, the Tulsa World food critic, some foodie kids, and Chef Remi

Seriously, it took so long to judge all the food that half the judges skeedaddled (past their bedtime?).    We didn’t stay for the results either.

I had to try a dog from Dog House.    The Hubs was stuffed at this point, but by-golly, it was my birthday.   I was eating my fill.

2013-11-09 14.35.52

This delight was The Mercury Dog…cream cheese, raspberry jam, and jalapeno relish.   Don’t judge.   It was too good to describe adequately.

As we rolled our way out of the festival, we decided to get something sweet.   We stood in line for 30 minutes at Lick Your Lips—the mini-donut trailer.

2013-11-09 16.22.48

The had the coolest machine that formed the donuts, fried them, and flipped them.  I had the “Fall in Love” minis with whipped cream and pumpkin sauce.    I ate them all.   The Hubs had the “S’mores” which he said would have benefited from a bit of whipped cream, too.

We waddled home and collapsed.   It was a great day.

I just had to add…

2013-11-09 12.54.44The Blue Dome district is in the shadow of the adult superstore.   We did not venture in here.

We had a great time!   There was also a pub run going on downtown.  We did not participate but it was interesting watching as well!

There is always exciting stuff going on in Tulsa!

  • Your husband knows you really well. Happy Birthday!

  • That was a really fun post and now I am feeling strangely full! What an excellent way to spend your birthday.

  • how fun. what a wonderful way to spend your birthday! By the way, have you seen the guy with the coke case cardboard box on his head? He has holes in the front. We caught him once coming out of a store without it on – maybe they didn’t let him in with it. He was very good looking, and smirked a little smile to us before donning his coke case. He’s always barefoot.
Also, I was just talking to a friend who lives in Tulsa and he was telling me that there’s a food truck called bohemia, or something bohemian…, she actually went to the Cordon Bleu. I guess the food is fabulous.

    • Have seen the Coke guy hanging out in the Brady District. Didn’t see him at this though.

It’s the Jezebel truck that you are talking about. She is usually at Cherry Street FM. Didn’t see her at this fest though. Her stuff is GOOD!

  • Happy birthday my friend 😀
What an excellent day, you certainly know how to enjoy yourself!

    Cheers

  • Aw, happy birthday Debra! What a GREAT day you had. I would so love to try those kimchi fries and the crazy Mercury hot dog. I’d never have thought to put those things on a dog, but it sounds really good somehow. And yay for the apple tree-so exciting. Your hubby is the best.

  • Happy Belated Birthday Debra!!! Love the present!! Did he plant it for you as well? 🙂 Looks like you had the perfect foodie birthday day.

  • Happy Birthday! I love the Blue Dome District – Kimchi Fries? Interesting – I guess it’s fresh Kimchi then? I love Bahn Mi – they have a great place in the Asian District up here but I’ve never had the pleasure of the Kimchi fry – My daughter’s Mother-in-law makes several kinds but the kids only like the fresh kind…..Anyway, looks likes a happy birthday was had by YOU! 🙂

    • Thanks for the well wishes, Kelli. What’s going on in downtown Tulsa makes me want to go by a loft. 🙂

      • But only if you can have a 2nd home because we looked at places down in Deep Deuce and it was too little space for too much money – we’d need to come back to the ‘burbs just so we could spread out!

  • Happy birthday (belated) and what a wonderful gift. A tree! That is sure to provide you with lots if good eating. Hubby gets an A+ for a fab gift!

Glad you had a great birthday! Sounds like the perfect day. Loads of great food, including Kimchi fries. Those sound deadly delish! Really fun post – thanks.

  • Happy Birthday friend!! I LOVE that you ate your way through your birthday – that would be a perfect day for me too. Kimchi fries sound interesting. I have made kimchi – how did they use it in the fries – looks mixed in with cheese??? We have a great Vietnamese place that we go for our pho and Banh Mi fix.
