Blue Hawaiian for #PartyLikeAMadMan

We are binge watchers around here.   Give us a new season of House of Cards and we might possibly just watch the whole season in a weekend.

Okay, we are not quite this bad, but we have been known to blow off a weekend (or two) binge watching and Mad Men is definitely binge-worthy. banner Join food, cocktail, and lifestyle bloggers worldwide as we celebrate (or mourn) the final season’s finale of Mad Men.   Mad Men Blogger Virtual Dinner Party is sponsored by The Unofficial Mad Men Cookbook and talented bloggers are posting recipes from this cookbook or any food inspired from the series during the week preceding April 5.

Since the beginning of this series, I was more than intrigued.  I have always been fascinated with this decade.  The creative genius behind this series, Matthew Weiner, chronicles the period from the Eisenhower-esque early 60s through the destruction of Camelot to the turbulent end of the decade.   The history, styles, fads, and cultural trends are seamlessly interwoven into the drama that is Mad Men. And the characters….the series is full of richly drawn characters, full of emotion and flaws, just like us.

My favorite character is Joan.   Most all of the characters in the series are enigmatic conundrums, but Joan is genuine.  Joan knows what she wants, who she is, where she is going, and what must be sacrificed to get there.joan Here is a cocktail that Joan shakes up  for her new husband as she tries to spend quality romantic time with him before he is deployed.

2015-03-31 17.12.27This beverage is a quintessential 60s cocktail made popular by the nation’s fascination with all things Hawaii starting in the late 50s.   The authors of the UMMC not only provide a synopsis of the inspiring episode, but also the history of the recipe (where relevant). Because there is always lots of imbibing in Mad Men, you won’t be surprised that there are twenty cocktail recipes provided in the cookbook.   Lots of them are retro but are coming back into style like the Manhattan and Old Fashioned.   mad men Please enter to win your own copy of The Unofficial Mad Men Cookbook.   Simply leave a comment below regarding your favorite character from Mad Men and why?

Toast the Mad Men Season Finale and raise this artificial blue cocktail in honor of a decade of decadence, lost innocence, female voices, equal rights, and the search for a national identity in turbulent times.

Aside:  I really did not want to like this artificial blue frou-frou umbrella drink.   Let me tell you, it is delicious…dangerously so.
