To Kill a Mockingbird Announcement for Food ‘n Flix

By the end of 9th grade, is there anyone in America that hasn’t read To Kill a Mockingbird?  The film version as almost as well loved as the novel.  As a former English teacher, I can assure you that after we read the novel, I always treated my class to a viewing of the film version.  (I could rationalize showing films with the best of them!)

I am excited to announce the September feature for Food ‘n Flix, the classic To Kill a Mockingbird.

Sometimes I really miss teaching, especially when I think about some of my favorite American classics like Harper Lee’s novel, To Kill a Mockingbird (and The Great Gatsby).

Harper Lee’s first novel was published in 1960 and soon after won the Pulitzer Prize for Literature.  It was made into a movie in 1962, winning Gregory Peck a Best Actor Oscar.  (The film itself was nominated for seven other Academy Awards including Best Picture.)  For so many years, this was Lee’s only novel until Go Set the Watchman (2015) was published (not without a bit of controversy).

The film has become a classic, just like the novel.

I can’t help but laugh at Dill, loosely based on Lee’s early friendship with Truman Capote.   “My Lord, Aunt Stephanie, you almost gave me a heart attack!”

Then, there’s Scout’s six-year-old precociousness (perhaps loosely based on Lee herself).

There is probably more food in the novel than in the film but there are still some good Southern food references:  biscuits, collard greens…

…and there’s always the ham.

Revisit this film from your junior high days with your foodie goggles on.  But, if you need a jump start, you might want to check out Dinner and a Movie.   If you want a Cliff Notes food lesson from the novel, here are some good sites:  Food in TKAM (a lesson plan) and Recipes from TKAM.
