Scrambled Eggs, Blushing Mimosas and Richard Gere

This month’s Food ‘n Flix feature film is Runaway Bride  (1999).

I love the opening segment.

A horse galloping along a lovely rural landscape (with U2 playing)…

a cat named “Italics”…

Richard Gere!

(I’m a Gere fanatic from way back—like from 1983 and Breathless.)

I couldn’t help but love the film and this was just ten minutes in.

Then there’s all those clever place name puns:  Curl Up & Dye, Inn Hale Tavern, etc.  Plus there’s the soundtrack that I previously referenced.  Besides U2, there’s the Dixie Chicks, Miles Davis, Eric Capton, et al. (Notice I didn’t mention the barber shop quartet.)

The movie with its girl meets boy, girl runs from boy, girl meets boy, girl runs from boy, girl meets boy, girl runs from boy motif was entertaining.

And, did I mention the whole Richard Gere angle?

I am sure that some will deem this as little more than chick flick fodder….It probably is…

I have two words for the haters out there:

RICHARD GERE

Surprisingly, there was a mighty lot of food mentioned in the film.  Here’s my list.

Food References

  • martini, scotch, pretzels from the smoky bar
  • “Ike Graham’s column on a platter” (Maggie’s request)
  • sweet peaches from the “Welcome to Hale” sign
  • Ike’s candy colored hair job
  • White wine from Ike’s apology to Maggie’s family
  • “Check on the crabs, Bob!”  (Hammering crab dinner)
  • coffee and cinnamon buns from Trout Bakery
  • Pepsi and hot dogs and Utz cheese curls at the softball game
  • diner food:  pancakes and bacon sizzling on the grill,   “I’m gonna go focus on your eggs, Bob.”
  • hot tea with Grammy and the birds and the bees discussion
  • midnight stroll through a cornfield
  • more chips and pretzels  and scotch at smoky bar upon Ike’s return to NY
  • Chinese take-out and fortune cookies and beer in Ellie’s apartment
  • Luau with tropical drinks and coconuts and “shrimp trout”
  • sandwiches and chips for lunch
  • Champagne and Yeats
  • ice cream cart at the wedding day melee
  • scrambled eggs with salt and pepper and dill, fried eggs, poached eggs, garden omelet with egg whites only, Egg in a Hole, hard boiled eggs, coddled eggs, and Eggs Benedict

For me, it had to be eggs.  Maggie can’t commit to a man or how she likes here eggs.   I decided to do a riff on Father Brian’s scrambled eggs.  This recipe can be used for a quick breakfast or a more elegant brunch.

Scrambled Eggs with Goat Cheese and Dill

Debra

The goat cheese and dill give plain scrambled eggs just the right kick.

Ingredients

  • 1 T. butter
  • 1 T. half and half
  • 4 eggs
  • salt and pepper
  • 2 oz. goat cheese, crumbled
  • 1 T. fresh dill, chopped
  • More dill for garnish
  • salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

Have all ingredients prepared and ready to go!

  1. On medium-high heat, melt butter in a non-stick skillet until it starts to bubble.
  2. In a small mixing bowl, beat eggs  and half and half.  Season with salt and pepper.
  3. As soon as butter starts to bubble (do not brown it), turn the heat to low and add eggs.  Cook and stir over low heat until eggs are almost set but still very creamy.
  4. When eggs are almost set, turn off heat and stir in crumbled goat cheese and dill.
  5. Garnish with more dill and serve.

Yield: 2

To complete this brunch dish, serve with fruit and Blushing Bride Mimosas (and maybe some Yeats).

These are very creamy eggs and don’t you love the color?  I get my eggs from a friend and her free-range chickens.

I made these eggs for a Sunday morning breakfast but I waited until the afternoon for the mimosas.

Blushing Bride Mimosa

Here’s a more colorful and tropical mimosa for your next brunch.

Ingredients

  • 1 c. fresh squeezed orange juice
  • 1 c. pineapple juice
  • Champagne
  • 1 T. grenadine
  • Maraschino cherries (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Make sure the juices and Champagne are well chilled.  Also chill champagne flutes.
  2. In a small pitcher or carafe, stir together the OJ and pineapple juice.
  3. Pour equal parts juice mixture and Champagne into chilled flutes.  Top off with 1/2 T. grenadine.
  4. Serve.

Yield: 4

Did I fail to mention that Richard Gere stars in this film?

He dresses up nicely, doesn’t he?

I love that Ike is seen in another couple of convertibles.   I think it’s fitting for each of these characters:  Jess Lujack from Breathless, Julian from American Gigolo, and finally Ike from this film.

From top left, clockwise: Breathless, American Gigolo, arriving in Hale, sitting in a 1973 VW Thing in Gill’s garage.
