Cherry Sangria Jam

I love Uncommon Goods.   The catalog is full of unusual, cool, quirky and expensive items.   But, I do find a lot of inspiration from it.

Sangria Fruit Salsa

Don’t these sound delicious? (from Uncommon Goods)

Just like these crazy sounding boozy fruit salsas.

Don’t they sound amazing?  Since I did little canning this summer, I wanted to experiment with interesting flavors for holiday gifts when I did find time to preserve.   I loved the idea of a sangria inspired concoction.  Instead of salsa, though, I would make jam.

Mom brought me some lovely cherries from her tree during her visit in July.  I froze them until I could come up with a great idea.  This was it.   Since we made our own Tempranillo (from kits), I decided that this Spanish wine would be great for a cherry-sangria inspired jam.

Cherry Sangria Jam

Based on Sweet Cherry Jam with Merlot and inspired by UnCommon Goods

Ingredients

  • 1 navel orange, washed well
  • 4 c. sweet cherries, pitted (Mine were frozen but thawed.)
  • 4 c. sugar
  • 1/4 c. bottled lemon juice
  • 1/2 c. Tempranillo wine*
  • 1 box powdered pectin (6 T. if using bulk pectin.)

Instructions

  1. Prepare a waterbath and sterilize jars.
  2. Thinly slice the orange and then quarter each slice.  Quarter the quarter.
  3. Place the orange slices, cherries, sugar, wine and lemon juice in a large heavy bottomed pot.
  4. Bring to a boil, stirring often, skimming any foam that forms.
  5. Once the temperature reaches 220 F., add in the pectin and stir until it’s dissolved
  6. Bring to a boil for one minute and then take off the heat
  7. Ladle the jam evenly into hot sterilized jars, making sure to leave a 1/4″ headspace.
  8. Place lids and rings on the jars and place in jar rack and lower into the boiling waterbath. Make sure water covers jars by at least 1 inch.
  9. Process for 15 minutes then carefully remove jars.
  10. Let set for one day then check to make sure they are sealed.
  11. Store in a cool dry place until ready to use.

Yield: 4-6 half pints

*Use whatever red you want.

This smells delicious when it is cooking, exactly like Sangria.

Not sure how to take this photo without my reflection! 🙂

Aside:  These are the cutest little jars that I bought at TJ Maxx a couple of years ago.  They are Bormioli Rocco Quattro Stagioni 5 oz. jars and I love them.  I reuse them for vinaigrettes, etc., but I wanted to can with them again so I ordered the one-piece lids from Amazon.  Good Lord, but they were over a buck a piece.   I still love the cuteness factor, though.

Thanks, Mom, for the cherries.  I only found a few pits.  🙂  Hope you enjoyed your jar that came in your recent birthday box!

I have ordered from Uncommon Goods before and love their products.  (See here.)    And, we have been inspired before from items in their catalog during  our annual Christmas-gift-making-blitz.
