Horse poop and the giant new garden.

We finished bricking up the garden walls this weekend and found a free source (via Craig’s List) for horse manure at a local ranch.  They even loaded it for us.  We tilled up the soil (carefully around the one lone tomato and the pepper plants), spread manure and leaf compost.

Our goal is to spread a thick layer of straw over this layer and then cover most of the garden with thick black plastic and let the whole concoction heat up and compost over the winter.

I did plant two rows of spinach and lettuce on the side where the peppers are still producing and a row of yellow onions along the north side.

We ordered frost cloth yesterday and my husband has a new idea for a cold frame.  We should see some green peeking through by the end of the week.  (So far, the weather forecast seems good this week with no frosts in sight.)

Still working on the wall and tilling.

Spreading leaf compost as well.

Our goal is to have so much produce that we have to set it by the curb with “free veggies” signs.  We want to be sick of tomatoes, squash, peppers, beans, etc.  If this garden doesn’t help, I don’t know what we will do!
