As the family reunion in Taos nears, I am experimenting with different gelato recipes. Besides taking all the kids to a farmers’ market to buy what we cook for dinner, another foodie family function will be gelato night. Each of us has a small, electric ice cream maker that we each will bring. Each family will make and present their gelato for one night’s festivities. A few of the more competitive kin are already trying to craft the most original, most outrageous and best gelato. I know of one who is experimenting with burnt caramel, another with making gelato from chocolate mint, while I, myself, am trying to come up with a green tea-pomegranate concoction. (I know, I know, pomegranates are not local, but I love adding pomegranate juice to many dishes–sweet and savory.) I am trying it tonight and will post a pic if it comes out as I imagine.
