Wonka and Chocolate Blueberry Banana Bread

I was brought up on the original Willy Wonka (Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory–1971) with Gene Wilder. I could not tell you how many times I have seen that movie.

Amy’s Cooking Adventures is hosting Movies & Munchies for June and it’s the newest tale of Wonka, the prequel (2023).

I was eager to watch Wonka, especially after the newest Dune installation.  Timothée Chalamet does an excellent job and glimpses of Wilder can be seen in his performance, just ever so subtly.

I know that there were songs in the original but I was not really prepared for the songs in Wonka. Other than Hugh Grant warbling the Oompa Loompa’s song, I couldn’t even hum anything from this most recent movie.

And more Hugh Grant was needed!

While Noodle was cute, I thought a lot of her story was lost. There were just a few weird oddities in the plot.  I know, I know…it’s a Willy Wonka origin story. I also think Keegan-Michael Key and Matt Lucas didn’t get enough play. (Olivia Coleman was unrecognizable!)

Anything chocolate will work for this post. As I was just picking fresh blueberries and Wonka mentions he always uses the freshest ingredients (right before he drops a pumpkin and has to pay), I decided to do a chocolate blueberry riff.  I was also reminded of Violet Beauregarde getting turned into a blueberry in the original movie.

Here’s what I came up with.

Chocolate Blueberry Banana Bread

Based on a recipe found here but with chocolate added!

More of a cake than bread. Vanilla ice cream on top is a must.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 c, all-purpose flour, plus extra for dusting the loaf pan
  • 1 t. baking soda
  • 1 t. fine sea salt
  • 1/2 t. baking powder
  • 1/2 t. ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 t. ground nutmeg
  • 1 c. sugar
  • 1/2 c. canola oil
  • 2 large eggs, beaten
  • 2 t. pure vanilla extract
  • 2 ripe bananas, peeled and coarsely mashed to yield about 3/4
  • 3/4 c. chocolate chips
  • 1 c.  fresh blueberries

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Butter and flour a 9- by 5- by 3-inch loaf pan. Set aside.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, salt, baking powder, cinnamon and nutmeg. In a large bowl of a stand mixer, beat the sugar, oil, eggs and vanilla until blended. Stir in the mashed bananas. Add the dry ingredients and mix just until blended.
  3. Add the chocolate chips and about half of the blueberries. Mix until just incorporated.  Remove from the mixer and carefully fold in the rest of the blueberries.
  4. Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan. Bake until a cake tester inserted in the center of the loaf comes out clean, about 1 hour. Cool for 15 minutes. Remove the loaf from the pan and cool completely on a wire rack, about 2 hours.

Yield: 1 loaf

This is a delicious, fudgy, moist bread and honestly it’s more like a cake. Definitely cut off a slab and top it with vanilla ice cream.

Thanks for hosting Amy. This is another film I probably would have not watched. (Secretly, I’m glad I did though.)
