Ferris Bueller’s Day Off made me nostalgic for the 80s.

MTV, floppy discs, pay phones, answering machines, boomboxes, Fieros…

Jennifer Grey (before Dirty Dancing)…

Charlie Sheen as a drugged out bad boy…

Matthew Broderick is a total baby-face…

Love Ferris’ room decor and I would like to delve into the symbolism.

Ultimately, Ferris is “a righteous dude” and this movie is a classic.

Why am I waxing poetic about an 80’s movie? Ferris Bueller’s Day Off is the August Movies & Munchies featured film.

Camilla is hosting and we could choose from two fun 80’s classics: Ferris Bueller or The Goonies. I had already reviewed The Goonies for an old Food ‘n Flix post. I focused on Ferris.

The Food

I can honestly say that I did not remember any food jumping off the screen as I recollected my many viewings of FBDO. I put the foodie glasses on for my umpteenth screening and here is what I spotted.

Seen or mentioned:

• Tropical tiki drink by the pool (iced tea)
• 31 Flavors Ice Cream Shop (Where Ferris allegedly passed out…)
• Pepsi (donation can for Save Bueller Campaign plus many other product placements)
• Chez Luis meal (pancreas, aka sweet breads)
• Pizza place (with more Pepsi placement) and Pepperoni with Black Olives
• Nachos at Wrigley Field (I believe there was more Pepsi there, too.)
• “Fry cook on Venus.”
• Pepsi and Oreos at the pool
• Steaks on a BBQ
• Tic Tacs
• Hot cup of soup
• Gummy Bear?

Even with those foodie glasses on, I didn’t see anything in the film that really inspired me. The Pepsi placement was strong so I decided to revisit my Goonies Pepsi Brownie post but add Oreos.

Pepsi-Oreo Brownies

Based on Chunk’s Pepsi Brownies

Ingredients

For the salad:

• 1 1/4 c. flour
• 1 2/3 c. sugar
• 2/3 c.  cocoa powder
• 1/2 t. fine sea salt
• 1/2 t.  baking powder
• 1 can (12 ounces) Pepsi 
• 20 Oreo cookies

Instructions

1. Adjust oven rack to middle position and preheat oven to 350°F. Prepare a 9” x 13” baking pan with cooking spray.
2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa, salt, and baking powder until combined. Add Pepsi, a little at a time because it will foam, until incorporated and batter forms.
3. Pour batter into pan. Place whole Oreos on top of the batter. (Think about how you would cut the brownies into squares and place Oreos accordingly.) Bake until a tester inserted into the middle of the pan comes out clean, about 30 minutes. Top will be slightly sticky.
4. Let cool completely in pan then cut into squares.

Yield: 20

These are a dense and fudgy brownie. And, granted, they might be something a fry cook on Venus might create.

I remember these as being very Pepsi tasting (and I’m a Coke person). I did NOT get that impression this time around. The Oreos added nice texture.

Glad I was able to re-watch this classic and create a new dessert. Now, if I just had one of those 31 flavors of ice cream.
