Princess Buttercup’s Butter Cups for Food ‘n Flix

We LOVE this movie!

princess_bride

As a family, we watch The Princess Bride at least once during the holiday season when everyone is gathered together.

The Hubs and I can recite whole lines of it.

“As you wish,” is my favorite line for The Hubs to recite.

Mine is “Inconceivable!”

I could continue on and on with dozens of other favorite quotes and gush about our love for this film…how can anyone resist a movie about “wuv, tru wuv” and which features the most perfect kiss?

Perfect kissYou can imagine my delight when I found out this film was the feature for May’s Food ‘n Flix.   Deb from Kahakai Kitchen is hosting this classic movie round.

Having not ever viewed the film looking for food inspiration, I sat down last weekend to watch and compile ideas.   Here is a stream-of-consciousness rambling list of what popped into my head.

  1.  Peanuts, Cracker Jacks and hotdogs (inspired from the Atari baseball game).
  2. An open bag of retro Cheetos behind The Grandson’s sickbed.
  3. Buttercup’s name made me think of delicately decorated cupcakes.
  4. Tomatoes (or apples) and bread on the farm table (right before Buttercup and Westley stare into each other’s eyes).
  5. “You were so slobbering drunk, you couldn’t buy brandy!”  (Vizzini berating Inigo.)
  6. “No more rhymes, I mean it!” yells Vizzini.    “Anybody want a peanut?” gleefully responds Fezzik.
  7. Eel-infested waters
  8. “The Cliffs of Insanity!”  (No food reference, I just love quoting this.)
  9. “I could give you my word as a Spaniard” (Inigo might inspire a Spanish paella?  With eels?)
  10. Apples , cheese, bread, wine—the battle of wits!
  11. “Never go in against a Sicilian when death is on the line!”  (Famous last words but they might inspire some great Italian food.)
  12. The Grandson eats a sandwich with some orange juice while The Grandfather sips coffee.
  13. The Fire Swamp (Barbecued R.O.U.S., anyone?)
  14. Wine and bread again in the Pit of Despair (carried on a tray by The Albino).
  15. Fezzik’s restorative stew as he revives Inigo.
  16. “A nice MLT—mutton-lettuce-tomato sandwich…So perky.” (Miracle Max)
  17. A chocolate coated miracle pill.
  18. The banquet hall’s heavy laden tables awaiting the wedding feast (lots of fruits and nuts).

I decided to go with an inspired recipe from Buttercup’s name.  I present Princess Buttercup’s Butter Cups with a powdered sugar sprinkle (or is it iocane powder?) and flowers.

Princess Buttercup’s Butter Cups

Debra

This pound cake recipe comes from an old county fair contest. I’ve adapted it here for cupcakes.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb. unsalted butter (4 sticks), softened
  • 3 c. sugar
  • 6 eggs
  • 3/4 c. unsweetened vanilla almond milk
  • 1/2 t. pure vanilla extract
  • 1/2 t. almond extract
  • 4 c. flour
  • powdered sugar
  • edible flowers, for garnishes

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 300 F.  (I use the convection bake setting.)
  • In the bowl of a stand mixer, cream butter and sugar until creamy.
  • Add eggs, one at a time, and beat well after each.
  • Combine milk, vanilla and almond extracts.
  • Add flour alternately with milk mixture, beginning and ending with the flour.
  • Beat one minute at high speed.  This is a very fluffy batter.
  • Using a scoop, place batter into lined muffin tins, filling each tin about 3/4 full. (You can also use two loaf pans or one tube pan.  Make sure you flour and grease the pans if using this method.)  I used one large muffin tin and one regular muffin tin yielding two dozen cupcakes (12 jumbos and 12 regular size).
  • Using a damp finger, smooth out the tops of each cake.
  • Bake at 300 degrees for 45-50 minutes or until a cake tester comes out clean.  (1 hour to 90 minutes for conventional pans.)
  • Cool completely in tins.
  • Remove and dust with powdered sugar and decorate with edible flours.  (I used yellow rose petals from our garden.)

These are sweet cakes so go easy on the iocane powder.

Thanks, Deb.  I am waiting with bated breath to see what everyone else was inspired to do.

I have never read the book but plan on remedying that soon as well as Elwes’ account of filming. Thanks for recommending that as well, Deb.

Total Aside:  While trying to make sure I left one of the offices at work with my glasses, keys, walkie-talkie and phone, I started patting my head, pockets, etc.  I made the comment that I felt like Peter Falk.  The entire office staff looked at me with question marks above their heads.

“You know, the grandfather in The Princess Bride?”

(Crickets.)

“The movie, The Princess Bride.  The one with a very young Robin Wright and a very old looking Billy Crystal…..?  Andre the Giant…..?”

I got more blank stares.

They had never seen this film.  I plan on remedying this soon and inviting them all over for  a movie night .

Like your coworkers, I don’t know the film either, but now I am curious. The cake for sure looks very tender and delicious!

      Right! 🙂

Peter Falk much more makes me think of Colombo. My favorite line: “Just one more thing…” which is even the title of his autobiography. But maybe now I have to watch “The Princess Bride.”

Sometimes I might act like Colombo at work as well. 🙂

I love the film but I haven’t gotten to it yet. I hope I have chance, I was so sick earlier in the month and my plans were shattered. Love the creation you were inspired to make and it’s such a lovely plate!

It was so much fun to watch for any and all food references. Hope you get in Tina. As my mom, pointed out, it’s on depression glass that belonged to my grandmother. 🙂

I am loving your Butter Cups–so pretty and very inspired. I would definitely want to eat enough to build up my tolerance for the iocane powder topping! 😉

I am always amazed that people haven’t seen this movie. Like you, I can recite much of it and do frequently (and probably annoyingly).

    Thanks for joining in!

Thank you for hosting! What a great film and one I wouldn’t have considered “foodie” before rewatching it! I, too, love the films that make us reach a little!

What!? There are people who have never seen The Princess Bride? Inconceivable! These sound awesome, and love the hint of what could-be iocane powder. Fun!

I know, right? It is totally inconceivable!
