Make your own pumpkin pie spice

I love granola and homemade is best.  Since we are approaching autumn, I wanted to make something that spoke to that.  I came across Pumpkin Granola at Two Peas & Their Pod.

Oh, my!

One of the called-for ingredients in the granola is pumpkin pie spice.   I have never bought this canned spice but always make my own.   I try to have a little canister of this homemade spice ready for fall.  It is simple to make.

Pumpkin Pie Spice

2 t. ground cinnamon
1/2 t. ground nutmeg  (I use fresh nutmeg.)
1/2 t. ground ginger
1/4 t. ground cloves

Mix this all together and store in an airtight container.

If you have never used fresh nutmeg, I encourage you to find some and buy a nutmeg grater.

Freshly grated nutmeg.

But, back to this granola.   It is quite interesting and uses applesauce instead of all the oil most granolas take.   I also added 3/4 c.  pecans to the recipe.  I threw all the wet ingredients in the blender so my pumpkin would be good and pureed.  (I was actually using some frozen Cheese Squash from last fall.)

Please check out their site and recipes, especially for this granola!

And for more great pumpkin recipes, Sweet Pea’s Kitchen had a Pumpkin Roundup last week.  She posted some great pumpkin recipes—everything from pumpkin scones to pumpkin whoopie pies!

Stay tuned because I made pumpkin-pecan waffles for breakfast.  I will post that  recipe soon.
