Food ‘n Flix Round-Up: The Breakfast Club

Yes, I know that The Breakfast Club wasn’t chock full of foodie references.

breakfast-club-2

Yes, I know that besides the title itself and the lunch scene, there is not a whole lot of food in this film.

But, dontcha know I think it was a worthy film for Food ‘n Flix this month.  (It is a classic and it does contain some food elements.)

I love it so much and it holds so much nostalgia for me that I had to recommend it.   For those of you who don’t know, Food ‘n Flix is a group of like-minded food enthusiast who like to watch movies.   Every month we watch a selected film and then get inspired to whip up something delicious.   Membership is open to anyone.

Food‘nFlix

Thank you to all who participated and met the challenge.

Let’s see what you all cooked up.

Let’s start with the newest member of the FnF family:  Shaheen from A2K – A Seasonal Veg Table.    Shaheen was inspired by the title of the movie and thinks the Brat Pack would approve of this Vegan Rock ‘n Roll Bagel. This “high octane” breakfast would appeal to Elvis as well.

Elizabeth at The Law Student’s Cookbook made a simple but delicious Turkey Sandwich with Roasted Tomato . Elizabeth writes,  “Though not quite as . . . creative as this lunch sandwich (eaten by Allison,) my sandwich would have been welcomed by me to have for a high school lunch. ”   I think this is very creative with the delicious roasted tomatoes, much better than the Cap’n Crunch creation that Allison made.

Sarah from Well Dined was also inspired to make a sandwich.   Her Breakfast Club Sandwich (Turkey, Bacon, Avocado, and Fried Egg on Toasted Whole Wheat Bread slathered with Roasted Garlic Aioli) looks delicious.   And, that title is a mouthful!   Sarah decided to make what she would want for lunch if she were stuck in Saturday detention.

Deb from Kahakai Kitchen took her  inspiration from “Claire’s princess-worthy sushi lunch” and the conversation that ensues. This scene always makes Deb laugh and it is one of my favorites as well, hence it being quoted again here:

Bender: [pointing to Claire’s lunch] “What’s that?”
Claire: “Sushi.”
Bender: “Sushi?”
Claire: “Rice, raw fish, and seaweed.”
Bender: “You won’t accept a guy’s tongue in your mouth, and you’re going to eat that?”
Claire: “Can I eat?”
Bender: “I don’t know. Give it a try.”

You guessed it, Deb made sushi-inspired Smoked Salmon Squares.

Caroline from Caroline Makes also found the sushi conversation between Bender and Claire hilarious but she landed on a good ol’ American “breakfast for dinner dish.”  Caroline writes, “I once had a proper, thick steak for breakfast when I was staying at a wonderful B&B in South Dakota; meanwhile eggs benedict is an American invention (even though it uses an English muffin). So it was a no-brainer, as the Breakfast Club would say.”  She went all out and made her own heart-shaped English muffins and Hollaindaise sauce for her rendition of Steak and Eggs Benedict.

Camilla from Culinary Adventures with Camilla went in a really creative direction.    She considered sushi and sandwiches as well but then thought about what makes her smile at breakfast time—coffee!   Kudos to Camilla for roasting her own.    I am impressed indeed.   Camilla also wrote, “And, unlike, Mr. Vernon I’m careful to keep my coffee in my mug…and not all over my desk.”

What’s better with coffee than a rich, decadent brownie.   Heather from Girlichef has the perfect accompaniment for this Camilla’s coffee:   “Magic” Brownies.    Yes, Heather was inspired from the  “smoking session” of the film.  (Where was Vernon when all this was going on?   Sorry, that was the principal in me coming out.)   She “didn’t actually put any “wacky tobacky” into her brownies, but she surmises that this group might have gotten the munchies and needed them to sate their appetites.    Way to think outside the box, Heather.

Evelyne from Cheap Ethnic Eatz also thought about breakfast.   She thought about what teenagers liked to eat—“Junk food, especially pizza. What is the most important meal of the day? Breakfast of course. So I think this Breakfast Pizza would be a hit with all pre and post pubescents.”   I do, too.

I was also inspired by breakfast.   I created a “Waffled” Breakfast Club Sandwich.

waffledI know that Andrew would like this for all the calories.  Bender would dig in because I doubt he often gets breakfast and Brian would probably be used to a homemade breakfast like this.   Allison would sprinkle it with pixie stix dust and Claire would maybe pick off the sprinkling of granola.    Who cares whether or not Vice Principal Vernon would love it or not.

I think that we covered every meal well.   We have breakfast, lunch, and dinner as well as a coffee break (with “magic” brownies) that were all inspired from this film.   Well done, all.   Thank you for humoring me and participating this month.

Camilla is hosting in February and chose another classic:  Babette’s Feast.   I think that there are a few more food references for inspiration in her choice.  🙂

Please try to join us.

Thanks for hosting! It was a treat to watch a movie I haven’t seen since the 80s. It made me pull our Ferris Bueller also. Definitely join me for Babette’s Feast if you can!

Ferris Bueller—love him. Yep, I am trying to run down a copy. I have never seen Babette’s Feast and am looking forward to it.

Thank you for a warm reception to the FnF family, as I mentioned in my e mail – I’ve been wishing to take part for a long while, but…well it doesn’t matter – I am already looking forward to next month and have already watched Babettes Feast and have an idea what I will be making, just have to make it now! Once again, thank you for hosting.

Yay, this was so much fun! I loved this pick, Debra. Everybody’s dishes were super-inspired, and I’m betting the breakfast club would have loved digging into this spread during the course of their day ;). Thanks so much for hosting this month!

Thanks, Heather. I agree that everyone was super inspired by this non-foodie film. LOL. Yes, the clubs would have loved this spread, especially your brownies. 🙂

Everyone made such fun dishes! For a movie that really wasn’t motivated by food, we definitely got inspired!

What a great gathering! Every single dish looked fantastic and I’m just sorry I got sick and couldn’t do it – I had come up with such a cool theme. Dang, I may do it anyway – in a few days when I finally get better. Looks like everyone had a great time!
