Great-Grandma’s Sour Cream Cocoa Cake

I love old recipes.  One really needs to have some baking and cooking experience before trying many of them.  I have read family recipes that state, “Add a handful of flour” or “Mix in shortening the size of an egg.”  These recipes are definitely not for the novice baker.

Since I have been fixating on old family recipes this week, I decided to add some recipes from the other side of my family.  I did have the pleasure of knowing this great-grandmother.  (The grape jelly recipe is hers as well.)

I remember my grandmother (her daughter) telling me this was a favorite birthday cake.  I imagine it was, sprinkled with powdered sugar or frosted with a white butter cream icing.

Sour Cream Cocoa Cake

2 c. sour cream
4 eggs
1 t. vanilla
2 1/2 c. flour
2 c. sugar
2 t. baking soda
6 T. cocoa
1 t. cinnamon

Mix sour cream eggs, vanilla and sugar.  Sift together dry ingredients, add and beat two minutes.

This makes a large 3 layer cake.

Bake 350 until done.
