We are planning on returning to Taos this summer and I cannot wait. The entire family will be there and we have rented a wonderful house that promises “unparalleled views of Taos Mountain and the Sangre de Cristo range.” I hope there is truth in advertising on this one.
One of our family traditions is that each “branch” of the family tree takes one night to cook dinner for everyone. Our plan is to take all the kids to a local farmers’ market and plan a meal with only what we can buy from the local vendors. I don’t think many other members of our family really frequent farmers’ markets in their areas so we hope to show the kids how much fun these outings can be and how rewarding it is to cook and create with local ingredients.
The Taos Farmers’ Market is awesome but for our plan to work we need to find a midweek market. I emailed the market manager and she was gracious enough to email me back with some ideas for area markets (like the market at Taos Pueblo). She also identified herself as the chef of The Love Apple, a Taos restaurant that specializes in local ingredient based food. She wished us happy foraging and an invite to the restaurant if we got tired of cooking. I googled it and found some really good reviews. I hope that we can break away from tradition and try the Love Apple at least for lunch. (I love getting sincere personal emails!)
The last time we were in Taos we took a road trip to Dixon where we found La Chiripada winery. We have heard that there is a mid-week evening market there so this might be a great destination for the family.
I am sure there will many future posts about our Taos trip. Since it is a family reunion, there will be many tales, I am sure.
