We were recently in Kansas City (I love this town!) and visited a couple of new eateries. A friend of a friend knows the owner of Garozzo’s so we decided to try it. We went to the original location in Columbus Park and as promised in the friend’s recommendation, it was just like The Sopranos. The atmosphere was great and the food was good, authentic, and hearty. I had the famed Spiedini alla Georgio (chicken breasts marinated in Amogio, rolled in Modiga Italian bread crumbs, skewered, and charbroiled, sauced with fresh crushed tomato with sautéed fresh spinach over angel hair pasta topped with Romano cheese). The chicken was awesome, but I hate watery pasta. The sauce was really tasty, though.
Portions are large here–so large that my husband, who ordered Pasta Three-Ways (Ravioli, spaghetti, and mostaccioli beneath a giant meatball), was seriously appalled by the amount of food that arrived.
I wished we had ordered the famed artichokes but there is always our next trip (when we will split an entree!).
The next morning, we were on the hunt for a non-chain, hometown coffee house. We found an eclectic one complete with a deadlocked barista. I can’t remember the name of the place, but I think we were down by the river. (I guess that doesn’t bode very well for a great review.)
The next time we go, I want to try Mary’s. We drove by this large purple restaurant a number of times and it always looked hoppin’. It is definitely on my list.
Speaking of “the list,” I was just catching up on Top Chef Masters. The episode I watched featured Chef Debbie Gold as one of the competitors. So, I am adding to my eclectic KC restaurant list The American as a must try.
