Enchanted for October Movies & Munchies

I loved the retro opening even though it was a bit cheesy. (Who else remembers the Wide World of Disney on Sunday nights?) That nostalgic-cheesy-retro Disney opening animation was cute. It was so cute that at one point I wondered if I was actually streaming the right movie for this event. Then, there we are transported to the nitty, gritty, dirty, realistic streets of NYC—New York City, where there are “no happily ever afters.”

I loved that the film didn’t take itself too serious and I loved all the Disney references to an earlier time like wishing wells, magic mirrors, poison apples, midnight tolling, carriages, and lost shoes.

Amy’s Cooking Adventures is hosting Enchanted for the October round of Movies & Munchies. (Movies & Munchies is a group of cinematic foodie fans. Membership is open to anyone who wants to view, become inspired and post a recipe or dish.)

The Food

Here’s what I spotted as I viewed:

  • Of course there’s an apple (from the opening scenes and the lip creation)
  • Pastries on the divorce law firm’s table.
  • Gyros
  • Take-out leftovers, coca cola
  • Soup stock
  • More poisonous apples
  • Pastrami sandwich and pickles
  • Caramel apples, candied apples, popcorn, pretzels
  • Picnic in the park
  • Pizza pie
  • Apple martinis
  • Cereal, coffee and orange juice
  • Martini with olives
  • Hotdogs

I knew I wanted to do a cocktail from the scene our heroine is given the poison appletini! Here’s my rendition.

Poison Appletini

Debra

Ingredients

  • 1 T. brown sugar
  • 1 T. white sugar
  • 1 t. cinnamon
  • dash of fresh nutmeg
  • 3 oz. apple cider
  • 1 oz. pomegranate juice
  • 1 oz. Fireball (cinnamon whiskey)
  • 1 oz. vanilla vodka (or plain vodka if you prefer)
  • a fresh apple slice

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl and using a small whisk or a fork, mix the sugars, cinnamon and nutmeg. Spread in a flat saucer or plate.
  2. Place ice in a cocktail shaker and add the cider, fireball, and vodka. Shake.
  3. Take a bit of apple cider and moisten the rim of a martini glass. Rim the glass in the cinnamon-sugar mixture.
  4. Strain the cocktail in the rimmed martini glass. Garnish with an apple slice.

Yield: 1

You could also use dried apples for garnish if you prefer. A dried wrinkly apple might be a better garnish for your Halloween party drink.

These are very drinkable but I’ve been limiting myself to just two at a time!

Thanks for hosting, Amy. This was the perfect movie for October. I can’t wait for our November movie announcement.
