In 2013, Practical Magic (1998) was the April feature film for the old Food ‘n Flix group. Movies & Munchies is revisiting the film this month for a Halloween theme. I have to say that I am super excited to see the sequel so I was glad to revisit the original.
On my rewatching of the film 13 years later, this is the food I spotted:
- “Chocolate cake for breakfast”
- Grapes, wine, roast turkey in the garden
- “Able to flip pancakes in the air”
- Chowder shack at the pier
- “She can eat a pound cake in under a minute.”
- Farmers Market
- Beers and cocktails by the pool
- Apples
- Tequila (w/bella donna)
- Making toast and frosting cupcakes (and eating chocolate cake)
- Jelly donut with cream
- Whipped cream
- Brownies for breakfast
- Midnight Margaritas
- Lime in the coconut
- More tequila, limes and salt
- Coffee
- Bowls of pears, other assorted fruits, and bread on the table
- Popsicles
- Nigella or “blessing” seeds
- Pancakes and bacon and special syrup
- More tequila for the final spell
I still love the aunts’ fashion choices (and hats)!!!!
I did hate the disney-like instrumental music at times. I thought it needed to be a bit more dramatic. I did like the soundtrack especially Faith Hill’s “The Kiss” and the two Stevie Nicks and Sheryl Crow duets. If you want to read more thoughts on the film, check out my older post.
I can’t believe I didn’t pick up on all the tequila when I watched the movie the first time. For my 2013 post I made two different brownies. I am really surprised I did not make a cocktail, too.
This time around, I am making one!
First, here is the aunts’ recipe:
Midnight Margaritas
Eye of Newt and toe of frog,
Wool of bat and tongue of dog,
Adder’s fork and blindworm’s sting,
Barbados Lime is just the thing.
Cragged salt like a sailor’s stubble!
Flip the switch and let the cauldron bubble.
Here is mine.
Practical Magic Midnight Margarita
By Debra
Ingredients
- 2 oz. tequila
- 1/2 oz. lime juice
- ¾ oz. honey
- 1 oz. pomegranate juice
- ice
- Sprig of lavender or rosemary (either works magic)
Instructions
- Add all ingredients but the lavender (or rosemary) to a shaker filled with ice.
- Shake vigorously for 5-10 seconds.
- Strain into glass and garnish with a sprig of lavender or rosemary. May serve over ice as well.
Yield: 1 cocktail
“How convivial!” (Aunt Jet)
Honestly, you can use any kind of juice you want. I just thought the pomegranate juice added the right witchy vibe. You can also use simple syrup or agave syrup to sweeten. Honey just seemed to fit the theme a bit more as did the lavender or rosemary.
Whether you believe in witches or not, these are still good words to live by.
Always throw spilled salt over your left shoulder. Keep rosemary by your garden gate. Add pepper to your mashed potatoes. Plant roses and lavender, for luck. Fall in love whenever you can.
I’m glad our little group revisited this film for October. Let me say that I had this post written by the end of September and I did NOT copy any of the other inspired-by margaritas from the other Movies & Munchies crew. 🙂
I just finished reading Practical Magic 2 (previously known as The Book of Magic.) Now I really can’t wait to see the movie.
Stay tuned for November when we will honor Dolly and watch Steel Magnolias (1989).
