I’m excited today because I’m hosting for the first time for Movies & Munchies (the sequel to Food ‘n Flix). We’re Facebook based now so check us out.
I chose Uncorked (a Netflix original movie) for the June edition. You can read the announcement post here.
The 2020 film follows Elijah, a young man from Memphis whose dream is to be a master sommelier. His father, an old school BBQ restaurateur, has other ideas.
There’s lots of great food and wine in the film. Here’s what I spotted:
- Ribs
- Grapes
- BBQ sauce
- Yeast
- Chablis
- Sides and desserts (in BBQ stand)
- Chardonnay—”the grandaddy of wine , the Jay-Z of wine”
- Pinot Grigio–“Kanye West”
- Rieslings –“Drake”
- Fried chicken and other broasted foods
- Greens
- Sock It To Me Cake
- McDonald’s
- Chicken
- Rib Tips with Extra Beans
- Antica Terra
- 2016 Corton Grand Cru
- Barolos
- Merlot
- Chicken, ham, macaroni and cheese, and greens (and ambrosia salad)
- Hennessy White
- Panda Express
- Coffee and croissant
- Barbeque spaghetti
- All you can eat crab
- Green beans
- Cheese board
- Croissant sandwiches
- “Fancy French desserts”
- Barolo from Italy–a father and son started it together
- Spooled gyro meat
- Assorted casseroles
- Sweet potato pie
- Ham
- Monkey bread
- “Green pepper, olives, smoked meat”
- Prosciutto
- Jack (neat)
- Brisket paired with a Barolo or Shiraz
- Smoked chicken paired with Zinfandel or Cotes Du Rhone
- Boone’s Strawberry Hill
- Hot links
- Pasta with tagliatelle
- Ribeye
- 98 Cancera
- 2013 Cab-Cav from Napa
That’s some delicious sounding food and some delectable sounding drinks.
I enjoyed the film. Some might think it’s light viewing but I loved the family drama and Elijah’s dedication to his dream while still honoring family commitments.
As always (and it seems especially when I feel like I have all the time in the world), I ran out of time for my own hosted round. I had envisioned a slow smoked brisket with a very special wine pairing with some home-style sides like mac ‘n cheese. As I look at the next five days, I see no time to do such grandiose cooking on the grill.
Instead I’m going to fall back on some former recipes and do a BBQ round up from the archives.
This is our all time favorite sauce. Use rosemary spears to daub it on.
Here’s a favorite side for BBQ meats.
Here’s a great salad for summer BBQs.
What would I serve with this virtual BBQ feast? According to Wine Enthusiast, “only the big red wines will do. Bordeaux, California Cabernet, and Barolo are perfect matches, but if the spice turns the dish hot, zero in on Zinfandel or a similarly spicy Australian Shiraz or Argentine Malbec.” I’m Malbec fan but I might seek out a Napa Cav-Cab.
I hope you enjoy this virtual BBQ meal today and I hope all the Movies & Munchies crew enjoyed Uncorked. Look for a round-up post here soon.
As an extra bonus, this is my favorite BBQ cookbook:
Those recipes do indeed look tempting! Our barbecuing was disrupted when we decided to reduce our meat consumption, but I still like the thought, and we aren’t fanatic — might do it again some time, especially with locally raised meat from nearby farms.

Thanks for hosting this month! I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. I can’t wait to look for that BBQ book.
Thanks so much for hosting Debra. I enjoyed the movie and reading what others thought of it.
Sounds like a film that I would enjoy too. The bbq sauce sounds wonderful.
I love this movie. In fact, I just watched it again a few days ago. It was even better the second time so good choice. Great suggestions for the 4th!
Big BBQ weekend ahead! So the timing of these recipes is excellent. Haven’t heard of the movie, but I’ve one of the 3 people who don’t have Netflix, so that explains it. 🙂 So I guess I’ll have more time to make these recipes. 🙂
