Wow, this summer’s Food ‘n Flix features have me feeling a tad bit ancient.
First there was The Princess Bride and now it’s Dirty Dancing. Both celebrate their 30th anniversary this year.
Dirty Dancing is a great film to watch on a lazy summer afternoon but it was a bit bittersweet, seeing the late Patrick Swayze in his glorious youth and the late Jerry Orbach as the father everyone wants to have.
Then, there’s Jennifer Grey, pre-nose job.
Chef Sarah Elizabeth is hosting this month. You can see her announcement post here.
Although I would not classify this film as a foodie one, there is a bit of food. Here’s the food and beverage references I picked up on:
- Roasted chicken and pot roast (in the Kellerman’s dining room during the family’s first supper at the resort.)
- There’s the watermelon that Baby lugs into the secret world of the resort workers.
- There’s all the food that Neil offers Baby from the kitchen’s refrigerators: brownies and milk, rice pudding, cabbage rolls, sweet gherkins, beef or beets (couldn’t distinguish) and fruit salad.
- Whiskey
- Old school Budweiser
- Retro cocktails
- Breakfasts of eggs/tomatoes/lox, grapefruit, OJ, danishes, and canteloupe
- “Hungry Eyes”
Gotta love the 80s!
I wanted to be overly clever and create a Vietnamese flavored pot roast based on Dr. Houseman’s comment: “Baby wants to send her pot roast to Southeast Asia.”
But, it’s way to hot to cook so I instead I did a watermelon fruit salad.
Watermelon Fruit Salad with Mango, Blackberries and Basil
This salad is perfect for the upcoming Fourth of July or for your other summer barbecues.
Ingredients
- 3 c. seedless watermelon, cubed or balled
- 1 mango, peeled, pitted and cubed
- 6 oz. fresh blackberries
- 2 T. fresh lime juice
- 1 T. honey
- 1 T. basil, chopped (I used a Thai variety.)
Instructions
- Prepare fruit and place in a large serving bowl.
- Combine lime juice and honey. Drizzle over fruit and carefully toss.
- Garnish with basil.
Yields: 4-6
Enjoy!
This recipe is simple, fresh and delicious. The slightly spicy mango works well with the milder watermelon and the berries just add a pop of brightness. You could use mint in this dish if you prefer, but I am a basil freak and the herb worked well, especially with those mangoes.
Have a great holiday and enjoy the fireworks!
Our Goddaughter is into everything 80s. I need to make sure this film is on her watch list. The music and the innocence could not be more indicative of that decade.
Believe it or not, I am actually posting early (not at the last minute like I normally do). You have plenty of time to revisit Dirty Dancing and join in the fun. Membership to Food ‘n Flix is open to anyone. For more information, click here.
I love all the fruit in this beautiful salad…perfect with Thai basil.
My nephew turned up his nose a bit when he asked if it was basil in the salad. He did eat quite a bit of it though. 🙂
This is such a beautiful salad – and so much fun, too…just like the film!
I found myself smiling throughout the film. It’s so innocent.
Yeah I have a feeling watching it again will be bittersweet. And I am feeling old too lol. Love this nice fresh fun twist for a watermelon salad!
Everyone looks like a baby….:)
Hi Debra!!!
Hope you had a fantabulous 4th!!! Your Watermelon Fruit Salad hits the spot, and, who doesn’t love watching Dirty Dancing, lol…Must admit, most likely won’t watch the remake though.
Thanks for sharing Debra…I haven’t been blogging for a while but I just had to pop by to say HI!!!
Good to hear from you, Louise. I didn’t even know there was a remake. I won’t seek it out either. Hope all is well with you and yours!
The pot roast would have been fun, but this salad makes much more sense. Really good stuff! Thanks so much.
Maybe I will do a pot roast this fall….
You make such pretty salads. They are always photogenic and I could dive right in!
Thanks, Tina. This was super delicious. I’ve made it twice so far, actually doubling the recipe for a Fourth celebration with family.
I had to look outside and see if the world was ending because you and I were both early to Food ‘n Flix this month! HAH! 😉
Your salad is gorgeous. Fruit salad makes me happy and I love the basil and honey in the dressing. Perfect for the movie. Thanks for sharing it with Souper Sundays this week too.
Ha! I was early with Volver, too. What’s happening????? 🙂
I just bought a watermelon today and had to come by and check out your recipe! So pretty and I love all the flavors!!
P.S. My daughter watches Dirty Dancing every.single.time it’s on TV!! It is a classic!!
How many years does it take to make a classic? Isn’t it really 30 years? Thanks for dropping by, Liz.
You are so right, who wants to cook in this hot weather. Your fruit salad of watermelon, mango, blackberries and basil is delightful to look at with the contrasting colors. I’m sure that honey and basil dressing brings all the flavors together. Sounds wonderful
I have now made this salad three times since the posting. Even if your watermelon is not the tastiest, the lime (and mango and basil and blackberries) help mask a less-than-stellar melon.
Good choice and great salad!
Thanks, M.J.
I agree, it was bittersweet to watch the late, great actors. This watermelon fruit salad looks so refreshing!
Thanks for hosting, Sarah. That was fun.

What a gorgeous, colorful salad. Perfect shout out for this movie.
Thanks, Wendy. I loved your leftover idea for FnF. Perfect inspiration from Baby’s comment at the dinner table.
Gorgeous salad! So perfect for the summer!
Thanks, Amy. I need to make it a few more times before the summer’s over.
