Mexican Street Dog Cocktail

The title of this cocktail has a couple of different stories behind it.

First of all, you might remember we have a new addition to the household:  Newt.

When we adopted him, we were told he was a Belgian Malinois mix.  Of course, we have no idea what he was mixed with.  (And even though he was an owner surrender, the shelter seemed to not up any information.)   I am obsessed with doing a DNA test on him.   As I was describing my obsession with a friend of mine, she said that a friend of hers did a DNA test on her dog.  He came back ad 45% Mexican Street Dog.  (Yes, it is a thing).   Since Newt will probably not be as big as a malinois, I’ve been teasing that he’s part Mexican Street Dog.

Now for story number two.   Our local museum is hosting a Frida Kahlo exhibit this summer.  (You can read more about it here.)   Frida had a Xoloitxcuintli, a hairless dog breed that is sometimes referred to as a Mexican Street Dog.

Story number three.  Because my husband knows my love of all things Frida, he brought this home for me.

Frida Kahl0 100% agave tequila.

Story number four.  We love a good Greyhound Cocktail and we drink a few Salty Dogs as well.  So, I decided to create a Mexican Street Dog cocktail using my Frida Kahlo tequila.

Mexican Street Dog Cocktail

Debra (and Newt and Mike)

In honor of Mexican Street Dogs everywhere.

Ingredients

  • 8 oz. grapefruit juice
  • 6 oz. tequila (100% agave)
  • 4 oz. Amaretto
  • 4 oz. lime juice
  • 2 oz. honey simple syrup
  • Grapefruit sparkling water (optional)
  • Lime wedges to garnish.

Instructions

  1. Add all ingredients (but the sparkling water) to a large pitcher. Stir.
  2. Fill glasses with ice. Pour cocktails into glasses (leaving enough room for sparkling water if topping off).
  3. Garnish with lime and stir.

Yield: 8

I LOVE these.  The Amaretto adds just a little something, as does the honey simple syrup.  Adding sparkling water just stretches the recipe and makes it more drinkable (as opposed to just a sipping drink.)

And yes, you make them by the pitcher.

I will keep you posted on the DNA outcome.   Those tests are expensive!

What’s your favorite cocktail?  (Or, who’s your favorite dog?)
